Greene using Brown's own brother for a model, I wonder if this is Jeremiah. Brown's brother? They were said to look quite similar. But I guess until we get the time machines and go back and watch the photograph session, we may never know 100%.

Alice Keesey Mecoy
GGG Grand Daughter of John BrownAlice Keesey Mecoyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13503890371067129041noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20136268.post-41200967112880986422014-04-22T19:51:12.787-04:002014-04-22T19:51:12.787-04:00First of all, hello Jean. Being a collector of famous old images I do believe that the new image of john Brown is really him unless he had an identical twin? The natural part of the hair, his mouth shape, the sizing of his head, tired eyes. The 1850's case and mount. I think it is the real deal? Thanks for inviting me on the blog. I am a huge admirer of John Brown's legacy and him. I also appreciate your interest in exposing this great American hero. His family can be proud of their heritage. I'm not so definite about the sideburns. I dint know that JB necessarily saw sideburns as vanity, although he was a clean shaven man. Of course, he also had a walking stick and a gold stud too--not the kind of thing one would assume of JB. Did he experiment with his sideburns? Most of us have tried things depending on circumstances, so I'm not convinced that is a factor. Still your point about the features of nose and ears have to be considered in either ruling out or including this pic. I suspect lots of folks will keep it as arm's length.Louis A. Nonetheless, I am skeptical. Comparing it to other dags known to be Brown, this fellow's nose is yet longer than the old man's, and to me, the biggest difference is the ears. Brown's are bigger with a much larger flat space in the upper lobe. The mutton-chop sideburns are definitely not characteristic of Brown. Until he grew his beard as a disguise, he was probably not prone to engage in such vain, decorative hair. My understanding of him is that until his last years he kept his hair neatly and closely trimmed, eschewing any vain decorations such moustaches and sideburns.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00286123881059084020noreply@blogger.com
