The first was working as an agent under James Redpath for emigration to Haiti (on behalf of the Pres. of Haiti, Fabian Geffrard), seeking African American recruits. However, John Junior was authorized to work in Canada, so this possibility seems less likely. More likely, John did not continue recruiting for Haiti and turned to recruiting for the war cause. In late 1861, he tried to recruit sharpshooters from Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Ohio. There were mustered into serves as Company K, Seventh Kansas Volunteer Cavalry. John Junior himself was medically discharged in May 1862. I'm not a student of John Junior's biography, so I'd have to research more myself to be more specific. If you let me know the name of the black person who owned the picture, I could see if there's a letter from him in John's papers. Also keep in mind that John Junior did some field work for his father prior to the Harper's Ferry raid; this may account for the person's familiarity with John Junior. I hope you can find out more specifics, such as by using local newspapers to see if you can nail down a visit by John Junior. Sounds fascinating. Best wishes--LDLouis A. Do you know what John Brown Jr. Might have been doing in Ripley or Red Oak during that time period?
